Welcome to the Spreewald and welcome to Lübbenau

The Spreewald

is a unique biosphere reserve situated in Brandenburg (south-east of Berlin). It is famous for its fascinating landscape that is unique in Germany and Europe. During the time the Spreewald has been developing into an endless labyrinth with a lot of small channels (called: Fliesse) and a total length of about 1600 km. The overall area covers a length of 70 km and a width of 16 km at its maximum.

Since 1990 the Spreewald has been having the status of a biosphere reserve and this status was certified by the UNESCO in 1991.

Lübbenau is one of the cities in the Spreewald which is situated amongst the beautiful nature. Once, Theodor Fontane said about this town, that it is the “secret capital of the Spreewald”. Lübbenau was mentioned in 1315 for the first time. The oldest trades were the linen weaving, the brewery and the market gardening.

A traditional vehicle is the punt, which has been used as the main mean of transport by the inhabitants until today. It’s worth doing a trip by this traditional punt or by a canoe on the 500 km long rivers (Fliesse). There a many vendors in Lübbenau who offers boat trips. The ports are the starting points for short or daily boatings to the Spreewald-typical villages Lehde and Leipe for example. Further on you can do individual boat trips on your on.

 
 
 
 

The Spreewald-villages Lehde und Leipe

Lehde is called “Venice of the Spreewald”. The total area is about 420 hectare. It is also called Museum village and is protected. The open-air museum, the farmhouse and the cucumber museum are situated in this village. The rural work methods and the traditions, such as the transport of all agricultural products, haven’t been changed over the centuries. A famous and popular cultural event is the annual Lehde-Festival at the end of September.

The Spreewald-village Leipe has been built on an alluvial sand isle (Kaupen). You can reach it via the 7 km long Europe hiking trail by going over 13 bridges and rivers (Fliesse). Until 1936 the village was only be reached by punt. In the Heimatstube you can get a lot of information about the history of the Spreewald-village. A special event is the annual festival of the huntsmen, the fishermen and of the farmers at the last Saturday in July.

 
 
 
 

Activity

There are a lot of possibilities to do something for your health, doing wellness and having fun. You can skateboard, cycling, hiking or walking. Further on you can go by canoe, boat, or by kayak on the rivers (Fliesse).
